Lower back and hip stiffness from sitting
Standing up after a long sit and feeling stiff through the lower back and hips is one of the most common things desk workers describe. It usually reflects hours in one folded position rather than anything dramatic.
The reassuring part is that this kind of stiffness tends to respond to regular, gentle movement, a little and often through the day.
Common questions
Why does my lower back feel stiff after sitting?
When you sit for a long time the hips stay folded, the deep muscles that support the spine settle into a low, static effort, and the same tissues carry an unchanging load. Held for hours, the area feels tight and slow to get going, which is why it often eases after a minute or two of walking.

Why do my hips feel tight from sitting all day?
Sitting keeps the hips bent and the muscles at the front of the hip short. Lengthening the front of the hip, for example with a gentle standing hip-flexor stretch while holding the desk for balance, is a common way to ease it.

Should I sit perfectly upright all day?
No single position is meant to be held for hours. A chair that supports the curve of the lower back makes sitting easier, but the bigger win is interrupting stillness more often.

Is one long stretch better than short breaks?
For sitting-related stiffness, a short reset several times a day will almost always do more than one long session at the weekend.
