Why Your Neck Complains More When You Work From Home

By Dr. Vinuta Harapanhalli, PT

Office chairs get the blame, but many people notice their neck feels worse at home. As a physiotherapist, I can usually spot the reasons in a single photo of the setup — and most of them cost almost nothing to change.

The laptop problem

A laptop’s screen and keyboard are attached, so one of two things always loses: either the screen sits low and the head tilts down all day, or the keyboard sits high and the shoulders shrug toward the ears. Neck complaints are already among the most common workday issues for office workers — research syntheses report one-year prevalence estimates in the 42–63% range (Chen et al., Physical Therapy, 2018) — and home setups often recreate the worst version of the equation.

Three changes that cost almost nothing

  • Raise the screen. Books under the laptop until the top third of the screen sits at eye height, then add an external keyboard. This single change removes the all-day downward head tilt.
  • Bring the work to you. Sit back in the chair and bring the chair to the desk. Reaching forward all day asks the neck to carry the head unsupported.
  • Break the stillness. Movement matters more than the perfect chair. Research on active breaks shows that short, regular movement reduces discomfort through the workday (Waongenngarm et al., Applied Ergonomics, 2018).

When set-up isn’t enough

Ergonomics reduces the load; movement builds the capacity to carry it. For office workers with neck complaints, strengthening and endurance exercise show meaningful improvements in comfort and quality of life — with benefits beyond stretching alone (Louw et al., South African Journal of Physiotherapy, 2017). That’s why Movana pairs desk-setup guidance with short, guided strengthening routines rather than stretching only — the Neck & Shoulder Relief program is built exactly on this principle.
